CategoryPwn, Systems

A teaching platform that starts at zero: systems, memory, the shell, crypto, web. Practice runs through dojos where belts mark progress from white to black. Around 5,743 tasks are listed, but the graded core is the first eight dojos.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Theory lands before the task, not after you are already stuck
  • Belts show where you stopped and what comes next
  • No registration: tasks and grading are open to anyone

Cons

  • The authors ask you not to post writeups, which makes progress hard to check
  • English only, and the later material leans hard on binary exploitation
  • Community dojos vary wildly in quality, so the count overstates the depth

Who it fits

Suits someone who knows what a pointer is but not what to do with one inside a function call. Built for students starting systems programming, where the dojo order matters.

Getting started

  1. Begin with the systems and memory dojos, not with exploits
  2. Keep every exploit in its own file and comment each primitive as you use it
  3. Work the belts in order, skipping one hides the idea the next one needs

History

Grew out of a systems programming course at Arizona State University and became a standalone platform. Dojos and belts keep being extended and the material stays free. The task count is a sum across all dojos including community material, so the official programme is far smaller than it looks.
