The cyber range from Positive Technologies: a virtual infrastructure with copies of real IT systems, each carrying its own business context. Work is organised in seasons with a timer and a rating, and annual tournaments decide who qualifies with a team.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • A whole emulated infrastructure: segments, domains, services that talk to each other
  • Season deadlines and a rating give solo practice an external clock
  • Annual tournaments let you qualify and then defend as a team

Cons

  • The entry barrier is real: without networks and Active Directory there is little to do here
  • The range sits in its own segment, so your tooling sees nothing until you connect
  • You cannot pick a single skill, tasks are built into whole season scenarios

Who it fits

Fits a team that wants something closer to an internal corporate range, with roles and segmentation. Cramped for solo practice, since the interesting parts need another person in the network.

Getting started

  1. Register with a team and wait for the season timer to open
  2. Set up reachability to the range segment before you blame the tooling
  3. Play a full season, since the rating counts whole seasons, not individual tasks

History

Running for years on a seasonal model, rebuilding its scenarios every season. The range, the timer and the badge scheme were all working when checked. What an outsider cannot verify is how much the tasks actually change between seasons.
